The stampede occurred at around 6 a.m. (local time) when a crowd of devotees were gathering to pray at the Kamtanath temple in Kamadgiri hill, Satna district, on the occasion of the Hindu festival of Somvati Amavasya.
Local police said a rope around the hill to keep worshippers in line broke, causing the chaos. Ten of the dead were pilgrims, including five women.
Stampedes are quite common in India, due to the large crowds that crowd the shrines. In 2013, 115 people died in a stampede and drowning at a Hindu temple in Madhya Pradesh state./.
