Director of Hoa Binh Hospital resigns after 18 people on dialysis

Mr. Truong Quy Duong, Director of Hoa Binh Provincial General Hospital, resigned from his position as the head of the place where the accident occurred.

Speaking to VnExpress.net on the morning of July 20, Mr. Duong said he would write a letter of resignation from the position of hospital director and ask to be assigned to another job. “The cause of the incident has been determined, with the responsibility and honor of the hospital director as well as the prestige of the industry, I would like to resign,” Mr. Duong said.

On the afternoon of July 19, Hoa Binh General Hospital held a meeting to review Mr. Duong as the head of the incident that caused 18 dialysis patients to die in the Kidney Unit, Intensive Care Unit on May 19. The meeting was attended by 84 people, including Ms. Bui Thi Thu Hang, Deputy Director of the Hoa Binh Department of Health.

The secret ballot results at the meeting showed that 70% agreed with the form of reprimand, 18.2% with warning and 10% with other forms of disciplinary action against the hospital director.Ms. Hang emphasized: "This is just the result of the Hospital Council meeting.On July 21, the Disciplinary Council of the Hoa Binh Department of Health will meet to review and issue disciplinary action against Mr. Duong. As Director of the Hoa Binh Provincial General Hospital, Mr. Duong is a staff member under the management of the Department of Health.

Previously, during the police investigation into the cause of the dialysis accident, Mr. Duong was temporarily suspended from work twice to serve the investigation.

On the morning of May 29, 18 patients undergoing hemodialysis at Hoa Binh General Hospital suddenly showed signs of abnormality. Eight people died one after another; 10 people were transferred to Bach Mai Hospital (Hanoi) for treatment and are now recovering. Authorities determined that the cause of the eight patients' deaths was the water source used for hemodialysis; the equipment was maintained and put into operation without proper inspection.
