CIA Director: Ukraine Could Fail by End of 2024
(Baonghean.vn) - Director of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) William Burns said that Ukraine could suffer defeat in the conflict with Russia by the end of this year.
According to RIA Novosti on April 19, CIA Director William Burns said at an event that Ukraine is at high risk of being defeated by the end of 2024, or at least Russian President Vladimir Putin will gain the upper hand in making basic decisions on the terms of a peaceful solution.
In this regard, the CIA Director called on US lawmakers to quickly pass a bill providing additional aid. This would allow the US to allocate billions of dollars for Ukraine's needs. "Otherwise the picture will be much more dire," the CIA chief warned.
Previously, in late February 2024, CIA Director William Burns made a secret visit to Ukraine to reassure the country's leadership as the US House of Representatives had not yet approved additional aid to Kiev.
According to the New York Times, the cooperation between the CIA and the Defense Intelligence Agency of Ukraine (DIU) began in late February 2014. The details of this relationship have been kept closely secret for a decade.
Around 2016, the CIA reportedly began training an elite Ukrainian unit called Unit 2245, tasked with capturing Russian drones and communications equipment so that CIA technicians could collect data and crack Moscow’s encryption systems. The New York Times revealed that one of the unit’s officers is now the head of Ukraine’s National Intelligence Service, Kyrylo Budanov.
