Eating lots of fruit helps reduce the risk of abdominal aortic aneurysm
The aorta is a major artery in the body, starting from the heart, running through the chest into the abdomen. An abdominal aortic aneurysm is a dilation of the abdominal portion of the aorta. If not monitored and treated properly, the aneurysm will grow larger, increasing the risk of rupture. If it ruptures, it will cause a lot of blood loss and lead to death.
In a new study published in the journal Circulation, researchers analyzed more than 80,000 Swedish people aged 46 to 84 over a 13-year period. During the study period, 1,100 participants developed aortic aneurysms, and 222 of them ruptured.
After examining the eating habits of the study participants, researchers found that those who ate two servings of fruit a day had a 25% lower risk of developing an aortic aneurysm and a 43% lower risk of abdominal aortic rupture than those who ate one serving of fruit.
According to researchers, antioxidants in fruits can fight inflammation and prevent the risk of abdominal aortic aneurysm.
