Pope Francis has expressed his willingness to travel to Moscow to meet Russian President Putin to help resolve the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

In an interview with the Corriere della Sera newspaper, the Pope said that on the very first day of Russia's "special military operation" in Ukraine, he spoke by phone with Ukrainian President Zelensky, while avoiding calling Putin. Instead, the Pope went to meet the Russian ambassador to Italy, demanding an explanation and calling for an end to Russia's military operation.

Pope Francis continued: "Then, after 20 days of war, I asked Cardinal Parolin to convey to Mr Putin the message that I was ready to go to Moscow. Of course, it is necessary that the Kremlin leader open some windows. We have not yet received an answer and we continue to wish to go there, although I am afraid that Mr Putin cannot and does not want to organize such a meeting right now."

The Pope added that he had not yet gone to Kiev because he had to go to Moscow first./.
