Australian Professor: US-China War in the East Sea is Inevitable

Australian Professor Joseph Siracussa said that in the context of rapidly escalating tensions in the East Sea, a war between the two superpowers, the US and China, is inevitable, despite the close economic ties between the two sides.

Tensions surrounding the East Sea between the two superpowers China and the US appear to be at high risk of erupting after news that China has tested a hypersonic missile capable of carrying nuclear warheads.

RT news site added that China has tested the WU-18 missile a total of four times in the past 18 months. The Wu-14 is a modern weapon with a speed 10 times the speed of sound. Therefore, many experts believe that if China officially puts this weapon into use, the US military will certainly face many difficulties.

However, the US said that the information about the WU-14 launch was exaggerated amid rising tensions in the East Sea. Meanwhile, China also quickly denied the information related to the test, affirming that it was only a regular military exercise.

The South China Morning Post recently quoted the Chinese Foreign Ministry as saying: "Tests to conduct scientific research and experiments on our territory are normal. These are tests that are not aimed at any specific country or purpose."

Given the current situation, Professor Joseph Siracussa at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, said that the US and China are "preparing for a war". Despite the large economic relationship between China and the global economy, Mr. Joseph Siracussa still believes that conflict is inevitable.

Professor Joseph Siracussa commented: "Economics plays a very small role when the parties have no other solution. Once you militarize the problem, you cannot have a diplomatic solution. I think what the US Secretary of Defense needs to do now is think about the possibility of conflict in the future and how to defeat China. The activation process has been prepared, now it is time to wait and see when it will happen."

At the conference "Re-evaluating the global nuclear order" last January, also according to Professor Joseph Siracussa, discussions about the "inevitable" war between the US and China were quite frank and open.

"We have discussed the inevitable war between the US and China. I think it will happen. It is a matter of power. The Pentagon is having disagreements with the Chinese side and the South China Sea could become the place to trigger a war between the two powers," Professor Siracussa commented.

Tensions between China and the US have increased in recent times after Washington repeatedly called on Beijing to immediately stop its land reclamation activities in the East Sea. US Defense Secretary Ash Carter once warned that the US would not "sit idly" in the face of China's arrogant activities in the East Sea.

The sudden appearance of small artificial islands in the East Sea is considered a "trigger" for war due to the current tension. With modern technology and advanced techniques, China has transformed the former reefs into small islands and then arrogantly claimed sovereignty. The militarization of the islands may lead to clashes between China and the US.

According to estimates, about 1,500 hectares of land have been claimed by China. This arrogance has "helped" the world's most populous country gain 12 more nautical miles of territorial waters and about 321 km more of exclusive economic zone.
