Based on the natural characteristics of oysters, after surveying and finding that the river section from Hoang Mai bridge through Phu Loi to Quynh Phuong is the most suitable place for oysters to grow well, people in hamlets 10 and 11 of Mai Hung commune, Phu Loi hamlet of Quynh Di... saved every area of land, competing to raise oysters.

People said: raising oysters is very easy, less costly in terms of investment capital as well as care, less risky than raising other types of seafood such as fish, shrimp, frogs... but brings very high economic efficiency. Oysters are the only type of seafood that farmers do not have to feed, do not have to buy seeds and almost all of them are raised for harvest.

Oyster farming techniques are also very simple: It is called "farming" but in fact people only need to put a few bamboo poles, a few bait materials such as stones, harvested oyster shells... hanging them in the river water, then wait for the harvest day. The next crop takes the harvested ones and puts them in the water, then "eats". Usually from March (lunar calendar) they are released for farming, from December to April of the following year they are harvested. The selling price of finished oysters is sometimes more than 60 thousand VND/kg, sometimes the lowest is 35 thousand VND/kg.

Mr. Tran Chung (Hamlet 10, Mai Hung) said that many households in Hamlet 10 and 11 raise oysters, earning at least 4 million VND/year, and at most 30-40 million VND, but unfortunately the river area is too small. His family only raises 25m in length and 3m in width but earns over 15 million VND/year.

In the same neighborhood as Mr. Chung, there are Mr. Mai, Mr. Thuyet, Mr. Trinh, Mr. Van Duc Lai, and Ho Van Son, all of whom are "experts" in raising oysters and have become rich thanks to... oysters. Mr. Lai alone has continuously earned over 30 million VND/year since 2004. Many households in Phu Loi area have also become better off, earning a living from raising oysters.

Oyster farming not only brings economic income, creates jobs for many surplus workers in rural areas but also preserves land, prevents erosion on both banks of the Mai River, and protects agricultural land.
