For many days now, the small house of Mr. Diem - Mrs. Binh in Hamlet 10, Cat Van Commune, Thanh Chuong District has always been filled with the laughter of family members and the greetings of neighbors. Especially on the evening of December 25, when daughter-in-law Dang Thi Hong Ngoc returned to her hometown, more neighbors came, Mr. Diem - Mrs. Binh also fidgeted because they were so happy. When Ms. Ngoc returned to the alley, her 5-year-old son Pham Viet An ran straight from the house down to the gate, hugged his mother and shouted: "Mom is home, mom is home. I won't let you go anymore". A few days ago, when the tunnel collapsed, all information about the incident was kept secret from An by Mr. Diem and Mrs. Binh. The whole family did not dare to turn on the TV much for fear that the child would know that his mother was trapped in the tunnel. Every time reporters or strangers came to the house, Mr. Diem took An to stay with relatives.

Unable to hold back her tears while holding her son in her arms, Ms. Dang Thi Hong Ngoc confided that when she was trapped in the hydroelectric tunnel, An was the person she thought of the most: “In the most desperate moments, everyone hugged each other to keep warm. As for me, every time I think of the image of my little boy at home, I feel like I have to try harder. I have to live to return to my child.” When she returned home, in the arms of her parents and relatives, Ms. Ngoc still thought she had just experienced a real dream. This year, 26 years old, Ms. Ngoc has a pretty face, white skin, gentle eyes and an approachable voice. 6 years ago, she married Mr. Pham Viet Bac, who is exactly 12 years older than her. Mr. Bac is a hydroelectric worker, who used to build the Yaly hydroelectric plant in the Central Highlands as well as many other small hydroelectric projects in Nghe An province. In 2009, the couple had their first child. The salary of a hydroelectric plant worker is meager, but Mr. Bac still wants to bring his wife to work with him so he can have a wife and a husband.

Before that, Mr. Pham Viet Nam, Mr. Bac's older brother, also followed his younger brother to work at the hydropower plant. In 2012, Ms. Ngoc left her children with her grandparents and followed her husband to work at the hydropower plant. Her main task was to provide logistics support for the workers with a salary of 3-4 million VND. Mr. Bac was entrusted with the task of being the construction team leader, with a salary of nearly 5 million VND/month. Every month, the couple sent money home to pay for school fees and help their elderly parents raise their children. Although life was hard, the brothers worked close together, so they somewhat eased their homesickness.

On February 16, the Da Dang - Da Chomo hydropower tunnel in Pang Tieng village, Lat commune, Lac Duong district, Lam Dong province collapsed. Mr. Bac and 19 other workers escaped, while Ms. Ngoc, Mr. Nam, his nephew Pham Viet Lanh and 9 others were trapped in the tunnel. Thanks to the efforts of the rescue team, on the 4th day of searching, the victims were rescued. After being treated to recover their health and spirit at the hospital, Ms. Ngoc and everyone else were supported with plane tickets to return home. Mr. Bac still had to stay behind to handle some work related to the tunnel collapse.

In the past few days, Mr. Diem and Mrs. Binh were the happiest people. In a moment, their son, daughter-in-law and 20-year-old grandson Pham Viet Lanh were all miraculously saved and returned home safely. “We have lived almost our entire lives, but perhaps this is the moment my wife and I are the happiest. In the past few days, we have been thinking that a miracle is happening to our family,” Mr. Diem confided.

Talking about her upcoming plans, Ms. Dang Thi Hong Ngoc said that she will return to Nha Trang to visit and thank the engineering force and rescue forces who saved her life. After that, when her health is stable again, she will continue to work as a hydropower worker as assigned by the company. “You live by your profession and die by your profession, every profession has its risks. I will not return to Da Dang Hydropower Plant but will continue to work on other projects because I have no income at home. My husband and I still have to work hard to raise our children and take care of our elderly parents. Surely God will not let us get stuck in the tunnel again,” Ms. Ngoc smiled happily.
