V2 orange variety on Phu Quy land
(Baonghean) -Orange V2 (Valenxia2) originated from Spain and was planted in Phu Quy land in 2004. This orange variety has many advantages compared to other orange varieties being grown. However, people have not yet clearly seen the superiority of this orange variety.
According to Mr. Le Huy Dung, Director of Agricultural Industry Company 3-2 (Quy Hop), who did his doctoral thesis on this orange variety, since 2005, the area of Nghe An oranges, mainly in Phu Quy land, was 2,180 hectares. At that time, the popular orange varieties in this area were Xa Doai oranges and Van Du oranges, which were seriously affected by pests and diseases, causing the orange area to shrink, and many places cut down oranges to plant coffee and sugarcane. Since the V2 orange variety appeared in Phu Quy, the orange area in this area has gradually increased.
The V2 variety has outstanding advantages in terms of productivity and superior quality. Mr. Dung made a comparative specimen and found that the Xa Doai orange variety has an average weight of 138.8 grams/fruit; Van Du orange 142.3 grams and V2 orange is 146.5 grams/fruit. Testing in the third year under the same fertilization conditions showed that: Van Du orange has 115 fruits/tree, yielding 8.02 tons/ha; Xa Doai orange 132 fruits, yielding 9.40 tons and V2 orange has 147 fruits/tree, yielding 10.49 tons/ha. But V2 orange has the advantage of requiring double the investment, giving double the yield. High-yield V2 orange gardens currently reach a peak of 25 tons/ha.

V2 orange garden gives high yield.
Visiting the orange garden of Mr. Ho Minh Toan, a household contracted to grow V2 oranges at Xuan Thanh Agricultural Industry Company, he said: "When growing V2 oranges, I was told that they are late-ripening oranges. That is an advantage because the old orange varieties usually ripen about 2 months before Tet. V2 oranges are dark yellow, sweet, have shiny skin, and very few seeds."
Mr. Le Cong Thuong (company 3-2) and Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngan (company Xuan Thanh) are two households growing V2 oranges with high productivity, said: "If you want an orange garden full of fruit, beautiful appearance, high quality, first choose soil with high fertility, especially intensive cultivation with enough fertilizer and timely pest control, especially to prevent red spiders. Before planting, fertilize each tree with about 30kg of manure, mixed with NPK fertilizer and 1kg of phosphate, 1kg of lime; in the second and third years, fertilize twice a year, each time about 300g of NPK for each tree."
Learning about the income of orange growers, Mr. Le Huy Dung said: "My family grows 300 V2 orange trees, on half a hectare of land. Last orange crop, sold wholesale from the beginning of the season at a cheap price, still brought in a revenue of 220 million VND."
Mr. Ho Minh Toan, team 4, Xuan Thanh Company, said: “Since 2004, I received V2 orange seeds to plant on an area of 1 hectare of land. In 2007, the first harvest yielded 7 tons, after deducting all expenses, I still made a profit of 70 million VND. The second year, it increased to 15 tons, with a profit of 300 million VND; in 2009 and 2010, it reached around 400 million VND. Both years, I sold everything from the beginning of the season, with prices ranging from 30,000 to 40,000 VND/kg. This year, 2011, the output may have decreased but the price was good, at the beginning of the season, customers paid an average of 50,000 VND/kg. At team 4, Xuan Thanh, Mr. and Mrs. Hung Nguyen, Toan Hong, Tuong Mui... all praised the V2 orange tree for its high efficiency, thanks to which the family economy is quite prosperous.
Talking to Mr. Vo Van Phong, Chairman of the Xuan Thanh Company's Trade Union, about the unit's orange production situation this year, he said: "The company's orange growing area has now been contracted to households, as oranges require large investments, so many households still find it difficult to expand their area. However, the company currently has 6 hectares of oranges in business from the second year onwards, concentrated in team 4. The company has planted another 10 hectares. Mr. Nguyen Dinh Dung, Head of Organization Department, 3-2 Agricultural Industry Company, also said: The unit's current orange growing area is 158 hectares. Of which 80% have been harvested. This year, the expected output is about 1,700 tons of fruit. Orange prices and the consumption market are relatively stable. The company is planning to develop V2 oranges to 300 hectares. The company's V2 orange nursery technical team has long provided seeds for the whole region, according to the new project investment. The unit can provide 20 ten thousand seedlings/year for the whole region.
The demand for high-quality oranges like V2 is still large, the largest consumer market is Hanoi. To capture a larger market share, companies in Phu Quy, first of all the two companies in Quy Hop, need to invest more in market access. The province also needs to help companies promote the Phu Quy orange brand on a large scale and systematically on mass media, contributing to creating a stable output for these specialty orange varieties.
