According to Google, between January and June this year, they received 20,938 requests to hand over user data from governments.

Traditionally, the search giant releases two such reports a year, covering two six-month periods.

In its first report of 2012, Google showed that the number of government requests in the first six months of this year increased by 2,681 compared to the previous report, and by 5,194 compared to the same period last year.

The search giant specifically reported that it had been asked to hand over personal information of 34,614 accounts, with the US government being the most “active” with 7,968 requests, India coming in second with 2,319 requests and Brazil joining the “top 3” with 1,566 requests.

The number of requests to remove content from Google also increased from 1,048 in the second half of 2011 to 1,791 in the first half of this year.
