Google offers free high-speed internet in Cuba

Technology corporation Google has just opened a free high-speed Internet connection point equipped with computers in the west of the capital Havana.

According to Star, the new technology center is equipped with 20 Chromebooks located right in the studio of Mr. Alexis 'K'cho' Leyva, an artist famous for his architectural and artistic works in Cuba.

There are also about 100 Google Cardboard virtual reality devices and two cameras that can transmit video signals from YouTube channels.

The center is open five days a week, 24/7, and can serve 40 people at a time. However, many Cubans hope that similar centers can be expanded across the country, meeting the needs of more than 11 million people.

Currently, although Cuba has about 60 areas with public wifi, they are not equipped with the latest technology and internet access speeds at the newly established Google technology center are much faster.

Google and studio owner K'cho hope the new technology center will help expand learning and educational opportunities for all people on the island nation. However, Mr. K'cho also pointed out the obstacles in this process because the US embargo on Cuba has not been lifted.
