Professor Nguyen Lan Dung: Foreign PhD salary 3.5 million VND
"At my research institute, the starting salary for PhDs returning from abroad is 3.5 million VND per month. The salary for bachelors is even lower," said Professor Nguyen Lan Dung.
Entering the government is not the only way
During a meeting with students in Hanoi, during the Career and Employment Fair on the evening of September 23, Professor Nguyen Lan Dung humorously mentioned the fact that every year there are 170,000 unemployed graduates: “Students, don’t even think about applying for a government job. At my research institute, the salary of PhDs returning from abroad, including my daughter’s salary, starts at 3.5 million VND per month. The salary of bachelors is even lower.”
Professor Nguyen Lan Dung said that his important task is to build jobs and increase income for employees, because the salary system for scientific staff is too low. The Institute has built a workshop to be able to immediately put research results into production, partly to improve the living standards of its members.
He said jokingly: "I try to increase the salary for my brothers to 8 million VND, equal to the salary of a car driver."
The famous professor advised students: Master two "weapons" to succeed, which are foreign languages and information technology.

For young people who dream of getting rich in their own homeland, Professor Nguyen Lan Dung said he is ready to help. Right in the discussion, the Professor gave the secret to starting a business and getting rich with 10 million VND in hand.
“With a pond available at home, you spend 3 million VND to buy an incubator, the next 3 million to buy wild ducks, and the remaining 4 million for food. Wild ducks have the characteristics of laying a lot of eggs, are not sick, and mainly eat corn sprouts, bringing high value when the meat is bought at the source for 200,000/kg, and on the market for 300,000-400,000/kg.
He cited the case of Mr. To Quang Dan (Bac Giang), known as the billionaire of wild ducks. Mr. Dan realized the "domestication" of this breed when he saw wild ducks caught in his net.
'Stand up, unemployed masters and bachelors'
I apologize to those who are unemployed and have a master's or bachelor's degree. It's best to look at yourself. Don't blame society, education, or your poor background.
Professor Nguyen Lan Dung shared that there is no reason why wild ducks cannot be exported abroad if serious investment is made in both quantity and quality of ducks.
The portrait of the second rich person, Professor Nguyen Lan Dung told students, is farmer Trinh Xuan Muoi (Muoi Bo). He has helped many people escape poverty through the model of growing avocados intercropped with coffee.
Starting as a school dropout who ran away from home to find a way out of poverty, he became “fated” with avocados as a hired worker, collecting fruit for traders. Discovering trees that produced delicious fruit at high prices, he thought about grafting branches from precious avocado trees.
Instructed by Professor Nguyen Lan Dung on the principle of “genetics determined by the grafted shoot”, Mr. Muoi patiently grafted the precious tree shoots onto young trees that grew from ordinary avocado seeds picked up at the market. The next turning point was that this farmer planted avocados and coffee to provide shade.
From the story of Mr. Muoi Bo, many people think of ways to extend the shelf life of this fruit, or export avocados...
Through the two stories above, Professor Nguyen Lan Dung shares with students: Don't be afraid of difficulties.
He cited the examples of Steven Jobs and Bill Gates to encourage students.
Professor sets record by graduating from university at 18 years old
“I was forced to study this major by my parents and now I am frustrated and don’t want to continue. Please give me some advice,” said a student.
Professor Nguyen Lan Dung said that he used to do jobs that he didn't think he would do well.
He said he graduated from university with a degree in History at the age of 18, then was assigned to teach... Microbiology. This was a big challenge that made him panic.
Immediately seeking Professor Dang Van Ngu - a famous scientist who was formally trained in Microbiology in Japan, he received three pieces of advice: "First, you must learn a foreign language because without a foreign language you cannot have knowledge. Second, when teaching at university, you must do research or else the lectures will be dry. Third, you must write textbooks, you cannot teach at university level". That has become the "guiding principle" for Professor Nguyen Lan Dung until now.
Through many difficulties, the Institute of Microbiology and Biotechnology (Hanoi National University) of Professor Nguyen Lan Dung has 40 young scientists. He is always proud that there are people there who are “better than me, better than our generation”.
Recently, he wrote an English book while admitting that his level was “far behind many students”. Professor Nguyen Lan Dung shared that we can still learn effectively by ourselves by learning the minimum words and the minimum examples. He created 1,400 minimum English words and promised to publish a book on minimum French.
The story that Professor Nguyen Lan Dung wants to send to parents is that they should not force their children to study the major they love, but should guide their children to follow their passion from a young age. Students can also choose the wrong direction, but they will overcome it if they have determination.
