On October 13, officials in the Democratic Republic of Congo confirmed a new outbreak of Ebola virus in the east of the country, where 125 deaths from the dangerous virus strain were recorded during the outbreak in August.
Speaking to reporters, DRC Health Minister Oly Ilunga said the latest outbreak was concentrated in Beni, a town in North Kivu, near the border with Uganda. He said the scale of the outbreak was not yet known, but warned that the situation was very worrying. According to the official, the new outbreak was due to a lack of community cooperation with the government's efforts to contain the outbreak.
Concerned about the rapid spread of the disease, the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo on October 10 issued a ban on hiding suspected Ebola patients and pledged to deploy police to protect medical staff working at burial sites, an effort to address the lack of community cooperation in anti-Ebola efforts.
