Electricity consumption sets record in hot midday
From 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on August 4, the national power system recorded a maximum capacity of about 54,500 MW, the highest since the beginning of the year, exceeding 5,000 MW compared to the same period in 2024. The North alone recorded 28,500 MW, a sharp increase after many days of intense heat from August 1 to 4.
Even on weekends, the load in the North still reaches 25,761MW - about 25% higher than on normal holidays, equivalent to double the capacity of Son La hydropower plant.
The hot weather has sharply increased the demand for cooling equipment, causing many power lines and transformer stations in Hanoi to be fully loaded or overloaded.
Some power lines and transformer stations were overloaded on August 4.
Overloaded lines and stations include:
500kV line: Son La – Viet Tri.
220kV line: Thanh Cong – Ha Dong.
500kV stations: Hoa Binh, Lai Chau, Viet Tri, Tay Ha Noi, Pho Noi, Thuong Tin...
220kV stations: Mai Dong, Chem, Thanh Cong, Bac Ninh 2, Dong Anh, Ha Dong...
On the afternoon of August 4, an incident at the 220kV Hoa Binh - Ha Dong line caused overloading of wires and transformers in the surrounding area. The operating agency adjusted the load to avoid spreading the incident. By 3:00 p.m. the same day, all loads were restored to normal.
The electricity industry recommends that people limit the use of high-power devices between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m., prioritize devices with energy-saving labels, and turn off unnecessary devices to reduce the load on the power system, especially during hot days like today.
