Pepper prices have been stable largely due to limited supply, while export demand has begun to recover after a long period of gloom.

Industry experts believe that pepper prices are likely to continue to accumulate or increase slightly in the coming days. The main reason is that the harvest has ended, the supply of people is gradually depleting, and the market has not had new shipments large enough to put pressure on prices.

In addition, competition from major producers such as Brazil, Indonesia and India is still not strong enough to affect global price trends. Vietnam continues to be the world's largest pepper exporter, accounting for more than 50% of total global trade.

In a positive scenario, domestic pepper prices could exceed VND141,000/kg if export demand improves sharply. However, the market still has some potential variables that need to be monitored.

World pepper prices: US imposes high tax on Indian spices, Vietnam benefits

In the world market, based on quotes from export enterprises and export prices in various countries, the International Pepper Association (IPC) has updated the prices of pepper of all types traded in the international market on August 4 (Hanoi time) as follows:

Indonesian Lampung black pepper prices increased slightly compared to yesterday at 7,108 USD/ton (up 0.63%). In addition, Muntok white pepper prices remained stable compared to yesterday at 9,937 USD/ton (up 0.64%).

Brazilian black pepper ASTA 570 price stable at USD 6,000/ton.

Malaysia's ASTA black pepper price remained unchanged from yesterday at $8,900/ton. Meanwhile, the country's ASTA white pepper price remained stable from yesterday at $11,750/ton.

Prices of all types of pepper in Vietnam remained stable compared to yesterday. Of which, the price of Vietnamese black pepper 500 gr/l reached 6,140 USD/ton; 550 gr/l reached 6,270 USD/ton.

Similarly, Vietnam's white pepper price compared to yesterday reached 8,850 USD/ton.

New tensions erupted when the US announced a 25% import tax on Indian spices, including pepper, turmeric, and ginger. This news made Indian exporters worry that they would lose market share to ASEAN countries, especially Vietnam and Indonesia, which are subject to only 20% and 19% tax.

The US is currently the second largest export market for Indian spices, with a turnover of over $711 million in the 2024–25 financial year. The imposition of high tariffs has forced importers to rethink their supply strategies and put a lot of pressure on Indian exporters.

According to representatives of the Indian spice industry, the industry’s profit margin is typically only 2-5%, making it difficult to absorb the additional tax. Having to pass on the cost to buyers makes Indian products less attractive, paving the way for goods from Vietnam to penetrate deeper into the US retail chain.

Indian companies are also facing the risk of order cancellations, increased logistics costs and raw material inventory risks. If this situation persists, the US may gradually shift to buying goods from Vietnam, a country with stable supply and more favorable tax rates.
