Hanoi Crop Development Center said that through testing the production of new rice varieties in the 2014 Spring crop, which were divided into two main groups: the yield group and the quality group, the results of the Spring crop rice harvest were very effective in terms of lodging resistance, cold resistance, disease resistance and yield higher than traditional rice varieties by 5-10 quintals/ha.

Specifically, in the 2014 Spring crop, the Center tested the yield group including DQ12 and KB2 varieties, the control group was Khang Dan 18; the quality group including Son Lam 1, Thuan Viet 1 and Huong Com 4 varieties, the control variety was Bac Thom No. 7 in communes representing the rice production ecological regions of Hanoi such as Hat Mon commune, Phuc Tho district; My Thanh commune, My Duc district; Dong Xuan commune, Soc Son district and the Center's plant variety experiment station in Thuong Tin.

In addition, the Center also tested two new promising rice varieties, QR2 and Bac Thom resistant to bacterial leaf rust.

The results of testing the pure quality rice group showed that Son Lam 1 variety has a growth period equivalent to Bac Thom No. 7, is moderately resistant to lodging, has good cold tolerance, is moderately susceptible to brown spot, leafhoppers, leaf blight, and rice blast, has an average yield of 56.39 quintals/ha, 5-7 quintals/ha higher than BT7, and is suitable for low-lying fields.

Thuan Viet 1 variety has a longer growing period than Bac Thom No. 7 by 5-7 days, is quite resistant to lodging, has good cold tolerance, is quite resistant to brown stripe blight, leaf blight, leafhoppers, blast, and is slightly infected with brown spots. The average yield is 56.68 tons/ha, 5-10 tons/ha higher than Bac Thom No. 7, and is suitable for flat and low-lying fields.

Evaluation of the pure rice yield test group shows that the DQ12 variety has a growth period 3-5 days shorter than the Khang Dan 18 variety, has average lodging resistance, is quite cold-resistant, has moderate brown spot and leafhopper infection, and is slightly infected with blast, with an average yield of 63.12 quintals/ha equivalent to the Khang Dan 18 variety, and is suitable for high-altitude and hilly fields.

In the trial production, two varieties of Bac Thom No. 7 resistant to bacterial leaf blight and QR2 were carried out at the agricultural cooperatives of Hat Mon commune, Phuc Tho district; My Thanh commune, My Duc district; Dong Xuan commune, Soc Son district, on a total area of 9 hectares. The varieties were planted within the seasonal framework of each locality.

Test results at cooperatives show that Bac Thom variety No. 7 is resistant to bacterial leaf blight, has a growing period of 133-135 days, is lodging-resistant, is quite cold-resistant, is susceptible to brown leaf blight, leafhoppers, and mild blast, has a yield of 52-60 quintals/ha, has good rice quality, and is suitable for high-altitude fields.

QR2 variety has a growing period of 128 to 130 days, 5-7 days shorter than Bac Thom, is lodging-resistant and has good cold tolerance, moderate brown spot, leafhopper, leaf blight, and blast disease, with a yield of 54-56 quintals/ha; suitable for high-altitude fields.

Evaluation of three crops shows that QR2 variety has a growth period 5-7 days shorter than Khang Dan, with a yield of 54-56 quintals/ha. Sticky rice can be arranged to be planted in the summer-autumn crop to have land early for the winter crop.

Agricultural engineer Nguyen Ba Bang, Hanoi Crop Development Center, said that based on the results of testing and experimenting with new rice varieties, Hanoi Crop Development Center has proposed the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to continue testing promising rice varieties, namely Thuan Viet 1, Son Lam 1, KB2 and DQ12, in different ecological zones of Hanoi in the 2014 Summer-Autumn crop.

Thereby, we will have accurate results before introducing these new rice varieties for large-scale trial production, and continue to conduct trial production of QR2 variety in the summer-autumn crop to have accurate conclusions before introducing it into Hanoi's rice variety structure, and introduce Bac Thom No. 7 variety resistant to leaf rust into the high-quality commercial rice variety structure in 2014 to reduce the current Bac Thom No. 7 variety due to its susceptibility to leaf rust, especially in the summer-autumn crop./.
