Chinese hackers hacked into the computers of Malaysian officials involved in the investigation into the disappearance of flight MH370 to access confidential documents just a day after the incident.

The attack was carried out against about 30 computers belonging to officials from Malaysia Airlines, the Department of Civil Aviation and the National Security Agency of Malaysia, the Malaysian newspaper the Star reported on Wednesday, August 20.

The malware was sent to officials from the above agencies in the form of a new article in a PDF attachment via email. The letter containing the malware was sent on March 9, exactly one day after the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 went missing en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

Before cybersecurity experts discovered and stopped it, a large amount of documents, including confidential documents, were sent to IP addresses in China.

The malware sent the stolen data via email to the servers, said Amirudin Abdul Wahab, director of the Malaysian Cyber Security Agency, an agency under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

“The emails contained data collected from Malaysian officials’ computers including minutes of meetings and confidential documents,” he said. “Some of them were related to the investigation into the missing MH370 flight.”

The agency believes the attack is linked to the disappearance of flight MH370. There were 153 Chinese citizens on board the plane that went missing in March.

“At that time, some people accused the Malaysian government of not releasing all the information,” Amirudin said, adding that the Malaysian government later provided all the information they had about the disappearance.

Flight MH370, carrying 239 passengers, disappeared over the Indian Ocean on March 8. And after months of unprecedented searches, there has been no trace of the plane.

Frustration over the lack of information about the flight has sparked ongoing protests in China, with some people saying the Malaysian government has not done enough to find their loved ones.
