For the past month, the people of Phu Phung commune, Cho Lach district (Ben Tre province) have been abuzz about the case of Mr. Ha Van Toi and Mrs. Bui Thi Vinh, both 91 years old, who came to request permission to hold their wedding ceremony at the commune's church.

According to Mr. Vinh, the couple wished to spend the rest of their lives together. Although they did not hold a wedding ceremony, they hoped that the Phu Phung Church would conduct a religious service (both are Catholic) and that the Phu Phung Commune People's Committee would issue a marriage certificate. However, this has not yet happened due to strong opposition from their children and grandchildren.

Mr. Nguyen Van Giang, Chairman of Phu Phung Commune, stated that the elderly couple's intention to register their marriage is legitimate. The commune will issue a marriage certificate once they complete all the necessary paperwork. The children on both sides are violating the law by preventing the marriage; the commune will provide legal and other related support to the couple.

Mr. Giang also stated that the support of the couple's children and grandchildren is essential, because although both are still mentally alert and healthy, they are elderly and it would be very difficult for them to remain together without the consent of their children and grandchildren.
