The robotic fish is designed to swim into enemy waters and protect the hulls of American ships. It uses a robotic fin to move through the water, and has been dubbed “Silent Nemo” by naval leaders.

Researchers from the US Navy's Chief of Naval Operations' Innovation Division and Boston Engineering tested the prototype at Little Creek, Virginia, on Thursday.

The robotic fish can be programmed to operate autonomously, or be controlled remotely. It is capable of moving silently through the water and making difficult turns, making Silent Nemo ideal for surveillance and reconnaissance missions.

The device, also known as the “Ghost Swimmer,” is about 1.5 meters long and weighs nearly 45 kilograms, and can operate at depths ranging from 25 centimeters to more than 90 meters.

“The Ghost Swimmer will enable the Navy to successfully conduct a variety of missions while keeping divers and sailors safe,” said Michael Rufo, director of Boston Engineering’s Advanced Systems group. “It swims by oscillating its tail fins like a fish.”

Thanks to its large battery capacity, the robotic fish can operate independently for a long time. In addition, it can also be controlled via a laptop with a cable longer than 150 meters. If operating independently, without a cable, the robot will have to periodically surface to download data.

“The idea is to take advantage of millions of years of fish evolution,” said project manager, Navy Captain Jerry Lademan.

“This fish has been perfecting itself for millennia, so in this project we tried to apply the idea of biomimicry - mimicking what nature has done to optimize the designs in nature. It looks so lifelike.”/
