The US Navy has planned to test the Block IB version of the Standard Missile 6 anti-missile missile, which, according to The Drive, could become a "killer" for Russia's Avangard missile in the future.

The newspaper notes that since the anti-missile missile itself will develop hypersonic speeds, in the future it could be used to intercept similarly fast targets, namely Russian and Chinese missiles and hypersonic weapons.

It is believed that the test of the Standard Missile 6 (SM-6) Block IB version, the weapon currently under development, to destroy a hypersonic target will take place later this year.

In March, Doctor of Military Sciences Konstantin Sivkov, Corresponding Academician of the Russian Academy of Rocket and Artillery Sciences, said that the use of multiple-missile interceptors instead of SM-6 missiles on US warships of the Ticonderoga or Arleigh Burke class makes it possible to "repel the attack of small groups of supersonic anti-ship ships with firepower" with a fairly high probability.

In March 2018, the expert assured that the Aegis Combat system equipped with SM-6 missiles, "the most advanced foreign air defense missile system", is not capable of intercepting hypersonic weapons.
