International navies increase anti-piracy forces

Dutch daily Volkskrant reported on April 4 that the Dutch navy had just killed two and captured 20 Somali pirates when successfully rescuing a fishing boat in the Gulf of Aden that was being controlled by Somali pirates.

In an effort by international naval forces to increase the fight against Somali pirates, the Dutch navy has sent the frigate HMS Tromp to join the European Union (EU) anti-piracy force deployed to protect ships in the Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden.

In 2010, the destroyer participated in an operation to rescue a German cargo ship that had been hijacked by Somali pirates. During this operation, 10 Somali pirates were arrested and will be prosecuted in Germany for kidnapping and endangering maritime traffic in the area.

Recently, in order to deal with the increasing piracy in the Indian Ocean region, especially in the Gulf of Aden, the United Nations and international naval forces have stepped up activities to suppress and prosecute pirates, such as building prisons specifically for this crime and severely punishing pirate suspects.
