At least 10 people died when two helicopters may have collided mid-air in a remote area of ​​northwestern Argentina, during the filming of a reality TV show.

The helicopters exploded while flying near the town of Villa Castelli, La Rioja province, after a possible collision, AP quoted Cesar Angulo, the provincial security chief, as saying.

Horacio Alarcon, a provincial spokesman, also said the two helicopters appeared to have collided while filming. "There were no survivors," Alarcon said. He said weather conditions were good and the cause of the crash was unclear.

The victims included members of the crew of a French reality TV show, AFP quoted officials as saying. "Several French citizens were among the victims. So far we only know of two Argentine victims," ​​Disel Cuneo, another spokesman for the local government, said.

According to the BBC, the passengers were French, participating in an international competition of survival and endurance. The competition takes place annually in this province and is widely broadcast around the world. Among the 10 dead were two pilots. One helicopter is said to be owned by the provincial government.

The crash happened in the mountainous region of La Rioja, a popular tourist destination, about 1,100 km north of the capital, Buenos Aires. Authorities are investigating the incident.
