South Korea clamps down on anti-North Korea leaflets

KBS reported that an official from the South Korean Unification Ministry said on October 20 that the ministry had asked a civil organization of North Korean refugees to control the distribution of anti-Pyongyang leaflets.

On the same day, the opposition Democratic United Party in South Korea also said that North Korean civil organizations should not conduct provocative activities against Pyongyang.

Previously, North Korea warned that if South Korea continued to send leaflets into North Korea, it would immediately respond militarily.

On October 19, the Korean People's Army (KPA) announced that it would launch an attack if a group of North Korean defectors living in South Korea continued with their plan to launch balloons containing leaflets across the border next Monday.

“The Western Front will launch a military attack without warning,” the KPA said in a statement carried by the KCNA news agency.

People in and around the area where the leafleting took place should “evacuate to avoid damage,” the statement said.

“The surrounding areas will become direct targets of KPA fire,” the statement said, stressing that “KPA never talks in vain.”

The distribution of anti-North Korea leaflets has been quite frequent recently. South Korean activists have attached many anti-North Korea banners to balloons, even attaching a 1 USD bill to each leaflet./.
