South Korean lawmaker Song Young-Sun, a member of the National Assembly's Defense Committee, said the country is developing bombs capable of penetrating North Korean bunkers or rock caves containing artillery.

According to AFP, an adviser to MP Song Young-Sun quoted her as saying that the Agency for Defense Development (ADD) in 2010 started a 6.2 billion won ($5.34 million) project to develop a "bunker-buster bomb". However, ADD officials refused to comment on this information.

Ms Song's comments, made on December 15, said: "ADD is developing a bomb capable of penetrating 1.5m thick concrete and the weapon is expected to be completed by 2013. After development, the weapon will be used in high-precision strikes against North Korea's military strongholds."

Meanwhile, a military official told the Chosun Ilbo newspaper that the bomb could destroy most bunkers and other structures used to hide aircraft and tanks. North Korea's long-range artillery is often hidden in fortified caves./.
