The election was held to elect the Chairman of Goseong County, South Gyeongsang Province; nine members of the provincial and municipal assemblies; and 14 members of the county and district assemblies. These positions were vacated due to invalidation of election, resignation, or death between January 4 and August 12, 2015.
The results announced by the Central Election Commission of South Korea showed that the ruling Sejong Party (SP) won 15/24 seats, while the main opposition New Political Alliance for Democracy (NPAD) only won 2/24 seats; the remaining 7/24 seats belonged to independent candidates.
This election is also the last before the general election in April 2016. This is also the first time Korea has conducted a by-election under the plan of reducing it to once a year, instead of twice a year as before./.
