On February 2, the US New York Times reported that Italian-American car manufacturer Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV will issue a software update for more than 228,000 Jeep Cherokees because the airbags in these vehicles can deploy when the vehicle is not in a collision.

The newspaper said the car company will upgrade the software that controls side airbags installed in the seats of 2014-2015 cars.

This recall affects more than 168,000 vehicles in the US market.

The decision to issue the recall came after Chrysler engineers investigated reports that the vehicles' airbag systems were deploying on their own.

The decision was announced after US federal safety regulators said on January 31 that Toyota, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Honda would have to recall about 2.1 million older vehicles to fix a defect that could cause the vehicle's airbags to deploy even when there is no collision./.
