Russian retailers hope to quickly resume supplies from Türkiye and are preparing new contracts between the two sides, which were suspended after Russia announced sanctions against Türkiye last year.

The sanctions are a harsh response from Russia after it accused Türkiye of shooting down a Russian plane in Syria in late November, killing a Russian pilot.

Currently, Russian warehouses are well stocked with fruits and vegetables from domestic producers. However, retailers may face shortages in the fall and imports from Turkey are the most viable solution, Oleg Ponomarev, co-owner of a Russian retailer, said on July 5.

Before the imposition of sanctions on Türkiye, Russian retailers often imported from Ankara products such as apricots, peaches, plums, grapes in the summer; tomatoes, cucumbers and citrus fruits in the winter.

“Although Russia always gives top priority to domestic production, we are having to look for external partners to compensate for products that we cannot produce and supply domestically,” a representative of the DIXY chain of stores told RBK.

Turkish food and some other goods have been banned from being imported into Russia since the beginning of this year.

This is part of the sanctions against Russia, which include: a ban on commercial flights and tour groups to Türkiye, visa exemptions for Turkish citizens as well as a ban on hiring Turkish citizens as laborers. At the request of the Kremlin, a tourism embargo has also been introduced.

However, last week, Russian President Putin allowed flights to resume between the two sides and lifted sanctions against Türkiye, after receiving an apology from President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
