The act of sinking a Vietnamese fishing boat can be called terrorism.

On the morning of May 27, Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Huynh Ngoc Son shared his views on the incident in which a Chinese fishing boat aggressively surrounded and sank a Vietnamese fishing boat.

- What do you think about China's escalating actions around the area where the Haiyang Shiyou - 981 drilling rig was illegally placed?

- The Chinese side expanded the area to protect the drilling rig, first there was a collision, then it became tense, 10 people sank with the ship but no one died because we knew and anticipated it. We had a voice to protest the sinking of the Quang Nam fishing boat.

- So what can we call the act of sinking a Vietnamese fishing boat? Can we claim compensation?

- We don’t know if the Chinese ship is a fishing boat or not, but protecting the oil rig and then sinking a Vietnamese fishing boat can be called terrorism. Up until now, we have been demanding compensation. They have not paid yet, but Vietnam continues to demand it.

- If China does not compensate, should we bring it to international arbitration?

- There is currently no arbitrator to handle the collision at sea. For now, we protest China’s deliberate sinking of a Vietnamese fishing boat. If you ram someone’s boat in their house, you must pay compensation.

- In this session, many delegates proposed to support fishermen at sea and in current conditions this is very necessary, what is your assessment?

- The 2014 budget does not see the Government proposing a spending plan to support fishermen in building ships. We need to calculate because resources are limited. Building ships requires fuel, fishing equipment, information systems... and organization. Having ships without good organization is still dangerous. Therefore, the Fisheries Surveillance and Coast Guard forces must have a tight protection plan. Protecting the Fatherland is not only about iron ships but also many other issues such as borders, inland...
