According to Nguyen Van Thai (born in 1992, resident of Kim Lien commune, Nam Dan district, Nghe An), a gatekeeper, at the time of the assault, he had just finished seeing off the North-South Reunification train when five young men smelling of alcohol came on three motorbikes from Bai Lu to National Highway 1A. Seeing him on duty, one of them asked him for a cigarette, and Thai said he had none, so the whole gang rushed in and beat him up. When he collapsed at his workplace alone, they left.
