(Baonghean.vn) - Reuters news agency reported that starting today (February 1), mainland Chinese passengers will officially be able to transit in Taiwan to reach their third destination, a sign of progress in civil aviation relations between the two sides.

Under the new rules, mainland Chinese passengers who want to transit in Taiwan do not need to provide any additional documents other than their regular passports, boarding passes, and tickets. Taiwan immigration officials also do not need to stamp mainland passengers’ travel documents.

The plan has been discussed for years. Earlier last month, China announced it would begin transit flights through Taiwan's Taoyuan International Airport to and from the mainland cities of Nanchang, Kunming and Chongqing.

According to an official from Taiwan's Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF), on January 2, two mainland Chinese passengers transited in Taiwan before flying to Bangkok, and after January 2, passengers on a flight from Kunming and a flight from Chongqing will transit.

The SEF announcement said that this new program is not only beneficial for exchange activities but also beneficial for the development of the civil aviation industry between the two sides.
