President Putin has been rumored many times to be leaving politics. |
Daily Star reported on April 21 that a letter believed to be written by a close, trusted friend of the Kremlin leader revealed the above information.
Specifically, the letter allegedly written by President Putin's political ally, Frants Klintsevich, a senior senator, revealed that the person chosen to succeed President Putin is the Chairman of the Russian State Duma (the Russian lower house of parliament) Vyacheslav Volodin. The letter states that Mr. Vyacheslav Volodin "will soon become president".
However, many people expressed doubts about the authenticity of the letter.

Russian President Putin himself appeared surprised when the letter was released during a public meeting at the Kremlin. After a moment of thoughtful silence, Putin neither confirmed nor denied his plans to leave politics.
Most experts predict that Mr. Putin will run for another presidential term and win. However, the Kremlin boss has not confirmed this.
Mr Volodin, a loyal political ally of Mr Putin, has not yet commented on the letter. But last month Mr Volodin called on President Putin to run for another term.

Senator Frants Klintsevich, who is accused of being the author of the letter, said that Mr. Putin was about to leave politics, transferring power to Mr. Volodin. |
Meanwhile, Mr. Klintsevich, the alleged owner of the letter, has spoken out to declare the letter a fake. In particular, Mr. Klintsevich had a dispute with Andrey Chepurnoy, who read the letter in front of President Putin, surprising and confusing the Kremlin boss. Mr. Chepurnoy is the leader of a group of veterans who participated in the war in Afghanistan.
“Any expert in handwriting can prove what I said,” Mr Klintsevich said, although the letter appeared to be typewritten. Earlier this year, it was reported that Valentina Matviyenko, the speaker of the Russian Federation Council, was a potential successor to Mr Putin.
