According to the Independent, the study's data was collected from 3,400 people aged 18 to 30 over a period of 20 years. They reported their income details and underwent cognitive tests.

Researchers found that people who consistently struggled financially scored significantly lower on cognitive tests than those who did not struggle financially. These tests focused on verbal memory and reaction speed, the brain's ability to process information.

The study’s lead author, Professor Adina Zeki Al Hazzouri of the University of Miami (USA), said that this situation is true even for people who are educated and have a good income but for some reason lack of money leading to stress. “Overall assessments show that economic hardship in youth is a factor that seriously affects cognitive health in middle age,” he said.

Scientists also warn that "cognitive aging" is caused by other factors besides anxiety and stress due to lack of money, such as unsanitary living environment and housing, drinking alcohol, smoking, and unhealthy diet.
