Coming to Son Thanh (Yen Thanh) on a day in May, national standard constructions such as schools, medical stations, new cultural houses, and high-rise buildings of the people are growing side by side along the wide village roads. Mr. Nguyen Tri Trung - Chairman of the Commune People's Committee said: "Achieving the results like today is the great determination of the Party committees and local authorities at all levels, but the most important factor is the people's donation of land for road construction.
Up to now, Son Thanh has basically cleared all the commune and hamlet roads, with a length of nearly 17 km. The entire length of the newly opened roads has been filled with gravel and the road surface has been raised. This is the result of the concerted efforts of all the people in the commune.
The road was widened after the people donated land.
As for the gravel dumping part, the hamlets discussed it themselves, but most hamlets agreed to contribute 100,000 VND per person to rent an excavator and dump the gravel.
The total volume of gravel poured on the road this time is about 150,000m3. On the local side, the policy is to collect 50,000 VND from each person to support compensation for people who have to move their assets on the land. Because most of the families who are eligible for land donation have built houses, livestock barns, or surrounding walls.
There are families who have just finished building a gate worth 20 million VND, but when the commune has a policy of mobilizing people to donate land to open a road, they are willing to rent excavators, jacks, and winches to move the entire gate to a new location, creating conditions for the locality to widen the road. In general, households living near the road have voluntarily donated land.
The Chairman of the Commune People's Committee said: Previously, the village road was only 3-4 meters wide, making it very difficult for vehicles to travel. Now, according to the standards for new rural construction, Son Thanh's village road has been widened to 9 meters, making it easy for not only agricultural vehicles but also cars of all kinds to enter and exit.
The local authorities will invest in building drainage ditches, planting trees, and paving or pouring concrete on all future routes. The entire Son Thanh commune has donated 36,000 square meters of land, and the assets on the cleared land are worth about 10 billion VND, but the commune only supports 2 billion, the rest is contributed by the people.
Visiting the family of Mr. Nguyen Huu Minh, in Hamlet 12, who donated nearly 100 square meters of residential land. Mr. Minh and his wife confided: "Previously, the family had built a system of embankments and solid gates. But when there was a policy to donate land to widen the village road, the family was ready.
After the clearance was completed, the family invested in rebuilding the works, including the rice mill, with a total cost of about 50 million VND". Mr. Nguyen Tri Long, hamlet 11, who donated 640 square meters of his garden land to the commune to open the road, confided: "Not only did he donate land, now the commune is mobilizing people to contribute money to pave the road, so we are also ready".
To achieve good results in rural transportation, the Party Committee, the government and the Commune Mobilization Committee organized many meetings with the people, listening to their thoughts and aspirations. After hearing the commune's policy, most families enthusiastically supported it.
Son Thanh is one of three pilot communes in Yen Thanh district to implement the new rural construction. Rural transportation is one of the most difficult criteria among the 19 criteria developed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. For Son Thanh, completing the rural transportation network is a great success. Currently, this locality still has some criteria considered the most difficult in the process of building new rural areas, which are labor structure and markets.
