Efficiency of VS36 hybrid corn variety from experimental planting
(Baonghean) - As a household participating in the VS36 hybrid corn growing model in the 2012 winter crop, Mr. Luu Van Ngu's family - Chairman of Phu Hau Cooperative (Dien Tan - Dien Chau), has nearly 1.5 sao of land for growing this corn variety. He happily said: Right after harvesting the summer-autumn rice, we focused on preparing the land and sowing from September 17, 2012, after nearly 100 days we were able to harvest. The growing period is short but the yield is quite high, an average of 390 kg/sao and very even inflorescences. Especially, this corn variety has short plants and strong roots, so when it encounters storms, while many other varieties fall, my corn field is still fine. On the entire model planting area of the Cooperative, the yield of VS36 corn variety is 15 - 20% higher than the NK66 hybrid corn variety planted next to it. In particular, although the corn bags are almost dry, the stalks are still green, so people can use them as food for cattle. Next year, we will expand the VS36 corn area on all the two-rice fields of the cooperative.

In the winter crop of 2012, Quynh Luu district also introduced VS36 corn variety for experimental planting on 3 hectares in Quynh Lien commune. The general assessment after one crop was that compared to LVN14 corn, VS36 corn variety is about 20cm shorter so it has very good lodging resistance, corn cobs are the same size, but VS36 corn has a small cob so the actual yield is much higher than other corn varieties.
Successfully researched and bred by the Vietnam Maize Research Institute, VS36 corn is a new generation corn variety crossbred between the VA5 father line and the VA2 mother line, so it has many advantages. First of all, it has a wide adaptability, is resistant to many diseases and can withstand intensive cultivation. In the northern provinces, the growing period in the spring crop is from 110-115 days and in the winter crop is from 95-105 days. The green leaves last until harvest, the leaves are thin and round, covering the cob, the grains are large, the cob is small, the grain is horse tooth shaped, and is bright yellow. Not only that, VS36 corn is also drought-resistant, cold-resistant, and lodging-resistant, so it can be grown in both the spring and winter crops, with an average yield of 80-85 quintals/ha, and if intensively cultivated well, it can even reach 120-130 quintals/ha. This is a corn variety that has been copyrighted by Thai Binh Seed Joint Stock Company and is being permitted for trial production by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
Commenting on this corn variety, Mr. Nguyen Van Lap - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said: In addition to the advantages in terms of productivity, resistance..., the plants and leaves of the VS36 corn variety remain green until harvest, so it will solve the problem of food for cattle in the winter. In addition, due to its short growing period, it will help Nghe An to sow about 7,000 hectares of winter land that can only be sown after the rainy season. However, because VS36 is in the trial production stage, when making the model, people need to sign a contract to have a binding responsibility with the company when necessary.
