The effectiveness of "Cow Bank" in Yen Thanh

(Baonghean) - In early 2011, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Red Cross Society, through the Nghe An Provincial Red Cross Society, implemented the “Cow Bank” Project in Lang Thanh and Bao Thanh communes, Yen Thanh district. The Society delivered 80 breeding cows to 80 poor households, with the commitment that when the first calf was born, it would be transferred to other poor households in the commune.

(Baonghean) - In early 2011, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Red Cross Society, through the Nghe An Provincial Red Cross Society, implemented the “Cow Bank” Project in Lang Thanh and Bao Thanh communes, Yen Thanh district. The Society delivered 80 breeding cows to 80 poor households, with the commitment that when the first calf was born, it would be transferred to other poor households in the commune.

After 2 years of implementation, the herd has produced 54 calves, of which 30 have been transferred to 30 other poor households. Confiding to us, Ms. Pham Thi Long in Hamlet 9A - Lang Thanh Commune said, "The Red Cross Society has allowed me to adopt cows since the beginning of 2011. In August 2012, I returned 1 calf to the Project. Now I own the mother cow and it is about to give birth to its second litter. I am very happy, the cow is my only major asset so far, I hope that from this cow my life will change."

Mr. Luu Xuan Huu - Vice Chairman of the Red Cross Society of Yen Thanh district affirmed: "The "Cow Bank" project supported and managed by the Red Cross Society has developed very well and achieved high results; in Yen Thanh, the Red Cross Society not only implements the "Cow Bank" project for poor households, but also supports breeding cows for single female former Youth Volunteers in Vien Thanh, Son Thanh, and My Thanh communes, helping them develop their economy. With 87 breeding cows, after 6 years of implementation, the herd has grown to over 435 cows, contributing to helping women escape poverty effectively".

It can be affirmed that the "Cow Bank" project of the Red Cross Society implemented in Yen Thanh district is a highly successful project that helps many poor households develop their economy and escape poverty.
