By the evening of November 9, US time (noon of November 10, Vietnam time), just a few hours after Clinton called to admit defeat to Trump, the former US Secretary of State was leading the total popular vote with a narrow gap of 47.7%-47.5%.

According to CNN, the latest results (as of 9:50 p.m. November 10, Vietnam time), Mrs. Clinton won 59,938,290 votes, when 92% of the total expected votes had been counted. Trump reached 59,704,886. The gap between the two sides is nothing compared to the total of 120 million votes counted. The number continues to change, as absentee ballots are still being counted.

It was a turnaround for Mr Trump, who four years ago declared “the Electoral College is a disaster for a democracy” after Mitt Romney’s defeat in 2012.

If Clinton continues to hold that lead, she will become the first presidential candidate since Al Gore in 2000 to win the popular vote and still lose. Mr. Trump won after reaching the target of 270 electoral votes, currently leading Mrs. Trump by a margin of 290-232, with Michigan being the only state yet to declare results...

Before Gore lost his race to George W. Bush in 2000, three other candidates—Andrew Jackson, Samuel Tilden, and Grover Cleveland, all of whom lived in the 19th century—won the popular vote but lost the election.

Entering Election Day on November 8, when most polls showed Clinton leading, albeit by a small but steady margin, Trump’s chances of winning seemed remote. The electoral college map was once considered favorable to Clinton, who was believed to have multiple ways to win 270 electoral votes.

However, Trump broke through Clinton's firewall, winning unexpectedly in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, as well as winning big in swing states like North Carolina, Florida and Ohio.
