Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said on July 25 that she did not use her personal email account to receive or send classified information while she was Secretary of State.

This statement is in response to a letter from a U.S. government inspector last week, Reuters reported. "At that time, I was not receiving or sending anything marked classified," Hillary Clinton said during a campaign stop in Iowa.

Controversies surrounding emails have plagued Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign, fueling concerns that the leading presidential candidate might be deliberately avoiding transparency and data retention laws.

At least four emails containing classified information were sent from Hillary Clinton's personal email account while she was Secretary of State, Inspector General Charles McCullough, who oversees U.S. intelligence agencies, said in a letter to Congress.

However, yesterday, Hillary Clinton stated that she knew nothing about the emails being investigated.

Mr. McCullough cited the example that out of 30,000 emails Hillary Clinton received or sent, 4 contained information that the government considered classified. At the time the emails were sent, all of that information was marked classified.

The use of a private email account, which connected to a server at Hillary Clinton's New York home, has drawn criticism from political opponents since it was exposed in March. Republicans accuse Hillary Clinton of trying to circumvent disclosure laws by using a private system.

Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton has consistently maintained that she did not violate any laws or regulations by avoiding using her government mail account.
