Immediately after the incident, medical staff rushed to treat and detoxify the victims, including many children.
According to the BBC, Douma is the last town in the Eastern Ghouta region still under rebel control. Government forces have increased air strikes on the town in recent days, after peace talks collapsed.
The opposition has accused Douma of being hit by a barrel bomb containing the nerve gas sarin, which was dropped by helicopter on April 7, affecting more than 1,000 people. However, the Syrian government has denied the allegations and called the information about the chemical attack in Douma "fabricated".
