Forming raw tea areas for export

April 11, 2016 17:34

(Baonghean.vn) - Nghe An currently has a raw material area of about 8,000 hectares of tea with new varieties of high productivity and quality. Vietnam joining the TPP opens up great opportunities for Nghe An tea.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Nghe An, by 2020, the whole province strives to stabilize the tea growing area with 10,700 hectares. Thus, the raw material area is large, with enough conditions to concentrate the source of processed goods - export to major markets.

The current tea infrastructure is relatively synchronous, the tea areas are concentrated along the Ho Chi Minh route, National Highway 7 in Thanh Chuong, Anh Son, Con Cuong districts. Convenient internal traffic, linked to processing factories, forming agricultural - industrial clusters, with sufficient conditions to develop high-tech agriculture.

By 2020, Nghe An strives to reach 10,700 hectares of tea, meeting raw materials for export.

Mr. Nguyen Van Lap - Deputy Director of Nghe An Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said: The production organization model is relatively good, linking agricultural production with processing and consumption (mainly export). Currently, we have formed a value chain between raw material production, processing and trade, in accordance with the requirement of unified management from production to consumption to meet market requirements.

The province currently has 86 processing lines with a total designed capacity of 602 tons of fresh buds/day. Currently, the province's fresh tea bud output is about 67,394 tons, and the processing output is 12,000 tons of various types of dried tea buds. Of which, Nghe An Tea Development Investment Company Limited purchases and processes 32,000 tons of raw materials, with a processing output of 6,400 tons. The remaining processing enterprises and facilities purchase and process 35,394 tons of raw materials, with a processing output of 5,600 tons.

To meet the raw material needs of processing facilities, according to Decision 6290 of the Provincial People's Committee, by 2020, the whole province plans to have 12,000 hectares of commercial tea. However, due to the change in crop structure, some localities have switched to other more effective crops... so it has been adjusted down to 10,700 hectares of commercial tea; the expected yield is 130 quintals/ha, the output is 139,100 tons of fresh buds, equivalent to 27,820 tons of dry buds.

“When joining TPP, we have the opportunity to expand the market and increase access to large markets. Currently, Vietnamese tea exports to TPP countries only account for 10-12% of total export output. With that raw material area, Nghe An tea has a great opportunity to export to other countries, especially Japan and the US markets,” said Mr. Lap.
