Coach Nguyen Huu Thang: 'The Disciplinary Board is too bureaucratic'
Yesterday afternoon, player Tran Dinh Dong still practiced normally with his SLNA teammates. However, the practice session was interrupted after the Disciplinary Board announced its decision after the tackle that broke Nguyen Anh Hung's leg (HV.An Giang) on February 26.
Specifically, Dinh Dong must pay a fine of 20 million VND and is banned from participating in football activities organized by the Vietnam Football Federation until December 31, 2014. Dinh Dong must be responsible for paying all medical expenses for player Anh Hung's injury.

As soon as he heard the news and talked to Sports & Culture, Dinh Dong was surprised: “Now I don’t know what to say or think anymore. I don’t know what evidence the Disciplinary Board had to base such a harsh decision on. With that ball, I thought it was just an accident in football and never thought it was an act of taking down the opponent. It was just a 50-50 ball fight so the injury was unexpected. Moreover, in real life, Hung and I consider each other brothers so we never thought of intentionally colliding.
But when I received the news that I was banned from playing until December 31, 2014, I had nothing to say, such a heavy penalty. There have been many fouls like that before, so why was I given such a heavy penalty? Now I don't know what to do but wait and will appeal with SLNA Club. As for my feelings, these past few days I have visited and encouraged Hung at the hospital and hope he recovers soon."
Coach Nguyen Huu Thang has a different view on the decision to discipline player Dinh Dong, although he cannot help but feel indignant: “I think the Disciplinary Board is too bureaucratic and makes decisions that are not worth it and are not based on any basis. Perhaps the Disciplinary Board sees SLNA as a provincial team with limited funds, so they impose this or that decision and we have to accept it.
I just want to know what basis the Disciplinary Board had to give such an outrageous punishment. That day, on the field, there was Mr. Tran Duy Ly, the Japanese head of the tournament's organizing committee, and there were reports from the referee, referee supervisor and match supervisor, but there was no document that day confirming that Dinh Dong's mistake was maliciously aimed at destroying the opponent.
I do not cover up or encourage players to play rough or commit malicious fouls. If my players act like that, I am ready to discipline them immediately. As far as I know, the first mistake of that incident was from player Anh Hung himself. This player used the wrong shin guard. The shin guard to protect his leg was too small and was just a formality to fool the referee during the match, so when a collision occurred, Hung's protective gear did not work.
Therefore, when the two players rushed into each other and collided, it led to an unexpected injury. Moreover, Hung is a player trained by SLNA and is very close to Dinh Dong in real life, so I think the two of them would not have had a conflict to the point of fighting as the press reported. I think the Disciplinary Board is under pressure from public opinion and is too hasty in making the final decision without basing it on professional reports. A decision that is purely a formality is unacceptable.”
It is known that SLNA Club will appeal the disciplinary decisions against Dinh Dong, and at the same time take internal disciplinary measures to deter players who commit malicious fouls against opposing players.
