Secret US-Taliban peace talks collapse due to information leak
The Telegraph (UK) on August 11 quoted Western diplomats as saying that secret peace talks between the US government and the Taliban collapsed after the content of the negotiations was leaked.
The breakdown of the talks at an early stage led to accusations that details of the talks and personal information about the Taliban's chief negotiator were deliberately leaked by "paranoid" figures in the Afghan government.

Absolute secrecy was a prerequisite for meetings held in Germany and Qatar earlier this year between Tayeb Agha, a former personal aide to Taliban leader Mullah Omar, and senior officials from the US State Department and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
The meetings were chaired by Michael Steiner, Germany's special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan.
