The latest labor market update released by the ministry in the first quarter shows that the higher the level of education, the greater the risk of unemployment.

Specifically, the unemployment rate at university level is much higher than the rate of people without technical expertise or degrees, accounting for only 1.75%; the rate with vocational certificates under 3 months accounts for 1.29%; and the rate of primary vocational education accounts for 1.99%.

The story of unemployed bachelors and masters has become alarming in recent years. It is no longer strange for bachelors to sell iced tea, work as construction workers, or deliver goods after graduation in Vietnam. In many industrial zones, there are currently a large number of bachelors applying for jobs as workers. However, when applying for jobs, they have to hide their university degrees to be added to the general labor force.

Lack of soft skills, will be "forever" unemployed

Many students today have professional knowledge but lack skills, especially the skills needed for work. Some young people think that as long as they are good at their profession, they will not have to worry about unemployment. They rush to study computer science and foreign language courses, with full certificates and degrees, but are not very interested in cultivating the skills needed for work.

Mr. Huynh Minh Khoi, director of Compass Education, a former student of Brighton University, shared: “There are some people who, when they first join the company, do not even know how to photocopy documents, use a printer, etc. When they first join the agency, these are the simplest tasks that they need to know but cannot do. Besides, their communication skills are also very poor.”

Ms. Nguyen Thi Minh Khue, Deputy General Director of DKT Technology Joint Stock Company, said: “Weak attitude and skills when looking for a job are what many young people today encounter. Basic mistakes such as sending emails to employers without a title, bad presentation, sending to many places at the same time or not researching the company at all during interviews cause you to be eliminated before you have a chance to prove your expertise.”

Want to be a teacher before being a worker

According to the Deputy General Director of DKT, the second reason why graduates cannot find jobs is the problem of the match between their current capacity and expectations when applying for a job. Especially some students from schools with good professional quality, when graduating want to immediately have high-paying, prestigious jobs, with the ability to assert themselves immediately. However, for those who have no experience, little professional training (only professional knowledge), getting a perfect job is very difficult.

Employers also advise students to start with simple jobs, trying to enrich their experience with unpaid internships.

According to Ms. Lan Huong, Deputy Director of GLN English Center, unpaid internships at companies are essentially learning practical experience from those who have gone before. While you are learning too much knowledge in the classroom, but not all of it is useful for work, this is what you prioritize doing.

No clear attitude and work goals

According to Ms. Minh Khue, there are currently many young people who are unemployed, or have found a job, but then lost it due to a lack of the right attitude towards work. “For DKT, when recruiting, what we need most from candidates is a positive attitude towards work, having goals and commitment to goals. Regarding experience and expertise, DKT is ready to provide thorough training.”

The Director of Compass Education also commented that recruiting a truly enthusiastic, responsible and dedicated worker is not an easy task. As an employer, he highly values candidates with an enthusiastic attitude towards work.

He shared: “I work with many students who have returned from studying abroad. They have too many illusions about themselves, not knowing that after studying abroad, they are integrating into a new environment, with many changes. Integration, familiarization, adaptation, and learning from the surroundings are necessary for them to develop their full potential. However, when recruiting, these students appear quite arrogant. Therefore, many students who have returned from studying abroad still do not have a job.”
