Summer cramming "drowns" children's abilities
Parents should clearly understand that letting their children attend summer talent classes is not to make them athletes or artists... but to let them learn what they like.
Studying too much damages the brain.
According to Dr. Pham Manh Ha, Deputy Director of the Center for Psychological Support and Counseling, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, there are many objective reasons why summer vacation becomes the third semester for students.
Children have summer vacation but parents do not, while not everyone has grandparents in the countryside to send their children there. Therefore, sending them to summer school is a temporary solution for parents. All parents want their children not to forget all the knowledge during the vacation.
Furthermore, during the school year, every child has to study 2 sessions/day so there is no time for skill subjects such as dancing, singing, music, drawing, swimming... Only summer time is left for parents to make up for it for their children.
Therefore, parents are forced to create a 3rd semester for their children. However, some parents are too ambitious, forcing children to know many different skills, learning one after another is not advisable.
Faced with the reality that too many students are stressed because of "summer break", Ms. Nguyen Ngoc Diep, Principal of Newstarkid Kindergarten (Hanoi) said that, for preschool and primary school age, extra study and over-studying will lead to brain damage in children, affecting their long-term cognitive process. Therefore, do not turn summer break into the third semester, create useful playgrounds for children in the summer.

According to Professor Pham Minh Hac, President of the Vietnam Educational Psychology Association, summer school should be both learning and playing. Children can consolidate and review knowledge with a few knowledge lessons, but absolutely do not study the program in advance.
Studying the program in advance is an unscientific way. The process of learning and acquiring knowledge must be done in a correct cycle. What children already know in advance will make them bored and unable to concentrate when entering the new school year, which will affect their learning ability. Moreover, when studying in the summer, sometimes teachers do not teach according to standards, so when entering the new school year, they have to study in a different direction, making it very difficult for students to absorb the lessons.
Ms. Tran Thi Ngoc Tram, Director of the Center for Preschool Research, Institute of Educational Sciences, said that there are many choices for children, it is not necessary to choose a certain subject but can be flexible, children can study at foreign language centers, cultural houses, children's palaces...
Dr. Pham Manh Ha believes that parents should clearly identify that letting their children attend summer talent classes is not to make them athletes, artists... but to let them learn what they like. Don't think for the children, don't turn them into experimental subjects. Forcing children to learn what they don't like will stunt their abilities, lead to negative reactions and stunt their development.
"Too much summer learning is unnecessary, especially for children from kindergarten to primary school. Playing and entertaining not only gives children knowledge that is not found in books such as life skills, communication, organization and management skills, but also brings them a refreshing spirit, intellectual and physical development, so that they have the conditions to develop comprehensively."
