Military semester - practical summer playground

(Baonghean) - In recent years, Military Semester has become the top choice, considered by many parents to register their children. According to many parents, after the courses, the children not only gain more experiences, make new friends, but also become more confident and mature.

Ms. Nguyen Tra Giang (Truong Thi Ward, Vinh City) learned about the Military Semester through the introduction of friends and relatives. She said that through contact and observation from these families, she clearly saw the excitement and enthusiasm of the children because they were learning things they had never experienced before.

Children become more self-aware, independent, and organized. In particular, there is an activity where parents and children write letters to each other, through which they can see more affection between children and parents, helping children appreciate family affection more. "After careful research, I found this to be a very good summer activity. I myself also want my children to have interesting summer experiences, so I did not hesitate to come here to register my children to participate in the Military Semester" - Ms. Giang shared.

With the desire to create a good environment for students to experience and improve themselves, since 2011, the Provincial Youth Union has coordinated with related sectors to organize the Military Semester in Nghe An province since 2011. Over the past 6 years, this activity has attracted more than 1,000 students aged 11 - 17 from many localities and units. Notably, this 7th year, there are students from mountainous districts such as: Ky Son, Tuong Duong, Que Phong, Quy Chau, Nghia Dan, Quy Hop, and even students from other provinces from Ha Tinh and Hanoi.

At the registration session for the 2017 Military Semester Program, comrade Nguyen Thi Thom - Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Youth Union, Head of the Organizing Committee said that by participating in the program, students will be introduced to the life of a soldier; equipped with knowledge of security, national defense, history of the Vietnam People's Army, skills training, physical education appropriate to their age and psychology. To create interest for students in studying and training, in this year's program, the Organizing Committee has focused more on content and lectures appropriate to the psychology and age of adolescents, life skills education, guiding students to develop comprehensively in truth - goodness - beauty.

Therefore, in addition to lessons on military knowledge, national security, discipline training, and soldier behavior, the program also equips students with necessary life skills and social practice skills such as: communication skills; organizing group activities, volunteering, community activities, field trips; culture, sports; games, etc.

This year’s military semester focuses on changes in content, methods and training locations. The basic new features this summer are: guaranteed facilities; the program is moderated to suit the students’ abilities and focuses on the development of their personality. The course focuses on training students to be independent, overcome their own fears and challenges to become people with stronger wills.

In particular, children are taught skills to prevent and combat child sexual abuse; knowledge of adolescent reproductive health care. At the same time, they are educated about family affection, sharing love with relatives as well as the community through gratitude activities, visiting families of policy beneficiaries, historical sites; cultural exchanges with officers and soldiers with the theme "Singing with soldiers".

Although the time is not long, thanks to training and education in the military environment, the children will have more time to communicate, confide, and share with each other, thereby increasing solidarity and attachment among the "young soldiers"; many students, especially the "rich kids" and "young ladies" have grown up, become more confident, mature, and steady; have a collective spirit, live independently, and are more responsible for themselves, their families, and society.

Comrade Nguyen Thi Thom - Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Youth Union, Head of the Organizing Committee affirmed: The "Military Semester" program is increasingly affirmed as one of the effective innovative educational methods of the Youth Union, suitable for the psychological and physiological characteristics and needs of the majority of teenagers; creating an attractive form to absorb the content, close to young people.
