Hoang Dinh Quang achieved a cumulative score of 3.98 – the highest ever at Foreign Trade University. Few people know that Quang was once the worst student in the class and was often bullied.

Childhood living in isolation

Huynh Nguyen Hong Chien, Nguyen Minh Quang and Nguyen Tai Thu are the three boys with the highest scores in the 15-year history of the big intelligence competition.

Not stopping there, Quang's cumulative score after 3 years of studying credits at the school is 3.98/4 - the highest at Foreign Trade University up to now. To achieve this result, in 3 years, Quang mostly got perfect scores, with only one subject (2 credits) ranked B.

According to information from the school's Training Department, Quang's score was unprecedented at Foreign Trade University. Previously, a student who achieved the title of valedictorian had a cumulative score of 3.94.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Huyen (lecturer at Foreign Trade University) shared: “Quang is a student full of determination, he sets goals and achieves them in everything he does. In class, Quang thinks quickly and positively, turning problems over and over again to think broadly. As a teacher, I myself have to learn from this student.”

Meeting the confident and mature student of Foreign Trade University, one would not think that Dinh Quang had a sad and painful childhood.

Quang was born and raised in a family where both his parents were civil servants, but they were not very happy. In 10th grade, unable to bear the pressure from the rift in his family, he moved in with his grandparents.

Since childhood, Quang was a poor student, always at the bottom of the class. This student was considered eccentric and unsociable, so he did not have a single friend.

Thinking back on his childhood, Quang shared: "Because I was spoiled too much, I didn't know how to behave properly, was lazy to study, didn't know the purpose of life, or the value of money."

“Everyone saw me as a freak. The worst was when I was in 5th grade, when I went to the library and was chased and bullied by many younger students. I didn’t fight back because I was shy and weak. At that time, I was too young to know how painful that feeling was.”

As he grew up, Quang wondered why his friends were so obedient and loved. He perfected his personality.

Chemistry changed my life

Everything started to change from a compliment from Dinh Quang's Chemistry teacher in the 8th grade.

The surprise performance of the Olympia record holder with 460 points

After two excellent record-breaking times, in the monthly competition, Nguyen Huynh Hong Chien only came in second with 175 points.

As a poor student for the past 7 years, Quang has never been trusted or praised by anyone. Until the summer vacation of 7th grade, when he was introduced to a new subject, Chemistry, Quang read the knowledge in the textbook in advance. When he officially studied, in the first few periods, he answered the questions correctly and was praised by the teacher.

“That was the first time I felt like I was not inferior, respected and very happy. I wanted to keep that feeling forever, so I studied and kept trying,” Quang confided.

The student uses the method of hard work to make up for lack of intelligence, studying 5 hours at home every night. Quang said: "If I don't understand the lesson, I will read it over and over again 10-15 times, think about it and then I will understand."

Thanks to that, right in the 8th grade, Dinh Quang was trusted and selected to review for the district's gifted student team. The initial achievements blossomed and bore fruit. In 9th grade, he achieved the title of second best gifted student in the province in Chemistry. At the end of that year, Quang passed the entrance exam for the specialized Chemistry class at Thai Binh High School for the Gifted, but his family did not have the conditions to study.

In high school, Quang loved Math and studied Physics diligently. In the same year, grade 12, he won first prize in the provincial Chemistry competition, second prize in the provincial Math competition, and second prize in the provincial Math competition on handheld calculators.

At the end of the entrance exam, Dinh Quang was overwhelmed when he passed the Foreign Trade University with 29.5 points, majoring in Foreign Economics, and was the second best student of the whole school in 2012.

Thinking back on the past time, the young man shared: “Chemistry changed my whole life. I thought it was a new subject, I could start over. Gradually I studied well, broke out of my shell, and made more friends. This was a great time because I felt like I had something in my hands.”

Young author writes popular book

University was a completely new time for the student from Thai Binh. Studying in an environment full of talented people, Quang affirmed his position when he was always trusted by teachers and admired by friends. He left his mark in the exciting lessons when presenting and answering questions. With the ability to summarize the knowledge of each subject in just 3 hours, Quang often supported his friends in each exam.

Currently, Dinh Quang is one of the most prominent authors of Lovebook bookstore – founded by university valedictorians and salutatorians. In more than 3 months, Quang completed a 700-page book called Breaking the National Chemistry Exam, selling 1,800 copies in the first month. The book will be reprinted in early 2015.

Conquering the National Chemistry Exam is Lovebook’s best-selling document ever. The book attracted attention thanks to a new chemistry solving method created by Dinh Quang called Counting Numbers. The book’s owner shared: “This is a very simple method for 8th graders to be able to score 1.5-2 points in the university entrance exam in 3 steps: Count – Cross – Solve”.

Two years earlier, Counting Numbers was created by Quang from his subtle observations, but it was not until he wrote the book that it was widely transmitted and had a great influence.

The young author said that when this method was born, it was considered shocking, and many people even doubted and argued. But as someone with a solid knowledge of Chemistry, Quang understood the value and position of the Counting Number.

To answer all questions from the pages of books, Dinh Quang practiced this new method through video lectures.

“From the negative comments, readers are very interested. Every day I receive hundreds of messages asking questions from students, Facebook increased by nearly 3000 friends in a short time” – Quang happily said. From Chemistry, exam psychology to love stories, life direction, Dinh Quang also enthusiastically answered for each individual.

Not only participating in writing books as an author, the Foreign Trade University student also filmed nearly 10 lecture videos and planned media. Putting all his heart into this brainchild, Quang hopes to be able to convey knowledge to the majority of readers, especially students who lack reference books and do not have money to go to extra classes in rural areas.

After graduating from university, Dinh Quang plans to study for a master's degree in the UK to broaden his thinking and experience fields such as international trade, import-export consulting or education.

Having experienced many emotions, loneliness, despair, happiness, success, Quang believes: "I think the most valuable asset each person needs to have is confidence."
