Ten members of the 15-member Security Council voted in favor of the resolution, while Russia, China and Germany were among five countries that abstained. No country voted against the resolution, which was co-sponsored by France, Britain, Lebanon and the United States.
Immediately after the resolution was passed, celebratory gunfire rang out across the rebel-controlled city of Benghazi in Libya.
