UN Security Council holds emergency meeting on war in Ukraine

According to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the security situation in eastern Ukraine is deteriorating, and the conflict is putting civilians in danger.

Addressing an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council on the recent violence in eastern Ukraine,The new violence is a worrying development in the Ukraine conflict, said the deputy head of the observer mission of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.

Civilians continue to suffer the consequences of this conflict. Both sides in the Ukraine conflict have placed military posts around populated areas. Civilians are being killed and their property destroyed.

Meanwhile, the West and Russia continue to blame each other for the increased violence in eastern Ukraine. US Ambassador Samantha Power accused Russia of arming Ukrainian opposition forces.

Meanwhile, Russian Ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkkin said that Ukraine violated the Minsk peace agreement.

“The critical stage has come. If we allow Kiev to continue not to take the necessary measures in Donbass, the situation may spiral out of control with unforeseeable consequences. Therefore, we call on other members of the UN Security Council who have influence on the Kiev government to do everything possible to prevent this from happening,” Mr. Churkkin said.

Ukrainian President Poroshenko also said yesterday that Western leaders attending the G7 Summit in Germany tomorrow will focus on discussing the situation in Ukraine.

The G7 summit is expected to discuss strengthening sanctions against Russia, possibly extending them by another six months, according to a European Union official.
