Coaching Council impeaches Huu Thang for U22 Vietnam's failure
The National Coaching Council commented that the Nghe An strategist used the wrong force and did not know how to motivate the players.
"The U22 team's preparation for the 2017 SEA Games was thoughtful and good, from VFF leaders to professionals. Up to this moment, there is nothing to complain about. But the more we expect, the more disappointed we are. This is an extremely bitter lesson."
On the afternoon of September 12, at the VFF headquarters, a meeting was held to analyze the reasons for the failure of U22 Vietnam at the 29th SEA Games. Chairman of the National Coaching Council Nguyen Sy Hien stated that the reason U22 Vietnam was eliminated from the group stage was entirely the fault of head coach Nguyen Huu Thang.
"In my opinion, there are many reasons for the failure. But the first shortcoming is that the head coach did not use the right force. Today he used the official lineup, the next day he needed to rotate to always maintain the tactics and strength of the force. However, coach Huu Thang made a big mistake. He only used one main lineup in every match. In matches like the one with Timor Leste, he could have brought in the reserves, many of the main players were so tired on the field that they were not replaced. The previous match was tired, the next match was not replaced, while the reserves and the official team were not much different. 4-0 is also a win, and 1-0 is also a win, so why try so hard.
The second reason is the players' psychology. Both of these reasons are technical issues. Therefore, the fault lies entirely with coach Huu Thang, who showed an unnecessary immaturity and confusion," said Mr. Nguyen Sy Hien.
For his part, Coach Huu Thang also admitted the above shortcomings and took full responsibility. Immediately after the 0-3 loss to U22 Thailand, the Ha Tinh-born strategist announced his resignation as coach of the Vietnam national team.
On the same day, during a meeting with the media, Vice President Tran Quoc Tuan shared that VFF is promoting the search for a new coach for the Vietnam team. However, for now, interim coach Mai Duc Chung will still lead the team in the match against Cambodia in the second leg of the 2019 Asian Cup qualifiers on October 10.
