13th ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Transnational Crime

On the morning of June 17 in Da Nang, Lieutenant General Do Kim Tuyen, Deputy Director General of the General Department of Crime Prevention and Control (Ministry of Public Security) chaired a press conference to announce some information related to the 13th SOMTC conference.

The 13th SOMTC and related conferences were held in Da Nang from June 17 to 22, with the participation of delegates from 10 ASEAN member countries; the ASEAN Secretariat; dialogue partners including China, Japan, South Korea, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, the European Union; the United States; international organizations UNODC and ARTIP. The conference focused on a number of issues related to counter-terrorism, illegal drug trafficking, human trafficking, arms trafficking, piracy, money laundering, high-tech crimes, international economic crimes and environmental crimes. From June 19 to 22, the 13th SOMTC and consultation conferences were held.

Lieutenant General Do Kim Tuyen said that this conference is a forum for the 10 member countries to present the situation and results of the fight against transnational crimes, and to evaluate the results of projects and innovations on cooperation in preventing and combating transnational crimes for a peaceful, stable and prosperous ASEAN. During the SOMTC conference, consultations and meetings with dialogue countries were also held to strengthen the political determination of ASEAN and dialogue countries in the fight against transnational crimes in the region. At the same time, specific measures to be taken to implement the joint statements of ASEAN and the target countries in the fight against transnational crimes were determined.

Since 1997, Vietnam has participated in and effectively contributed to ASEAN's cooperation activities in preventing and combating transnational crimes through the SOMTC and AMMTC cooperation frameworks in the fields of exchanging criminal information, cooperating in implementing requests for criminal assistance, extradition of criminals, and training to improve the capacity of law enforcement officers...
