Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Tran Viet Thanh; Professor, Academician Nguyen Van Hieu, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology; Professor Sukekatu Ushioda, National Institute for Materials Science, Japan chaired the Conference.
Speaking at the opening of the Conference, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Tran Viet Thanh emphasized that the 6th International Conference on Advanced Materials Science and Nanotechnology is an opportunity for domestic scientists to meet and exchange academic knowledge with international colleagues in the field of advanced materials science and nanotechnology; thereby assessing the level of development as well as the necessary and sufficient conditions for developing this field in Vietnam in the coming time.
According to Deputy Minister Tran Viet Thanh, in recent times, Vietnamese science and technology has achieved remarkable results, especially in areas that are Vietnam's strengths such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, mechanics, etc., and has formed a number of research groups approaching world-class standards.
Vietnam's applied mathematics research major ranked 19th in the world and first in ASEAN.
In the field of physics, Vietnamese scientists have followed modern and interdisciplinary research directions such as quantum information, quantum optics, nano... helping physics rank 64th in the world and 3rd in ASEAN.
2012 marks 10 years of development of nanoscience and technology in Vietnam.
Over 420 reports in the field of materials science and nanotechnology by scientists from Japan, France, the Netherlands, the US, Korea, Australia, the UK, Cuba, Denmark, India, Thailand, Vietnam, etc., of which over 40% of the reports by Vietnamese scientists were presented and sent to the Conference, focusing on introducing new research works in the field of new materials and nanotechnology.
At the conference, which will last until November 2, in parallel with the activities of the 5 subcommittees: Advanced electronic and photonic materials; Nano materials and components; Materials and technology for environmental pollution treatment; Clean energy materials and components; Nanotechnology applied to life sciences and agriculture, a signing ceremony will take place for a number of research cooperation agreements between Vietnamese and foreign scientific groups on materials science and nanotechnology./.
